I have no clue what the difference was, but after re-running the full install (which did not overwrite the no-cd exe), I was good to go. 5MB for the full install even though I had done a complete install previously.
When it listed the options for "minimal", "regular" and "full" installs, it showed that it needed an extra. I had trouble with it at first (either freezing in startup or complaining about lack of a texture file), so I tried re-installing the full install.
I was having problems with MC2 freezing, and I thought it might be the copy protection so I tried installing the no-cd patch.
